Hear No Evil Speak No Evil Week Six (About Make Music Lagos) By RepJ 360

Make Music Lagos was essentially Lagos’ celebration of World Music Day, like Make Music New York. It happened on the 21st of June and will happen again next year (if you missed it), God willing. It was a very enjoyable event. Quick side note, this year the organizers were able to pull off 12 small concerts simultaneously at 12 different locations whilst also setting up for a grand finale, among other kinds of events. The smaller concerts had a plethora of varied acts, which my band was part of. It is this smaller events I am referring to.
It was an entirely enjoyable event, like I said, especially when you consider the scale and the fact that it was free.
As we prepared to take the stage, several other acts presided us, all of whom were Christian acts. I am for affirming your beliefs and using opportunities to evangelize, I mean my band name is RepJ360 (the ‘J’ standing for Jesus) so it is clear that I am unashamed of my faith and wear it boldly. So, imagine my shock, surprise and distress and when I found myself being ashamed and uneasy when the first act came out singing well known Christian songs sung during most Praise Worship sessions in churches. I began to ask myself, “abi, you’re a hypocrite ni, saying you’re unashamed and now that you’re in a public place and a brethren is flying the faith flag high you feel like digging ground”. Several questions continued to flood my mind and each one more distressing than the last as they continued to push me towards the realization of my hypocrisy. But I refused to accept that I truly was, so I began asking my friends around me, perhaps they could shed some light on it for me or if I was the only one feeling that way. It turned out that I wasn’t the only one that felt uneasy about the fact that act after act was doing different praise worship songs at an event that was tagged “non-religious”, but it seemed I was the only one that seemed distressed about my apparent hypocrisy. Some of my friends (who are devout Christians) were of the opinion that it was inappropriate because it would make people who are not of faith uncomfortable and uneasy. Which is weird because it seemed to be having that effect on the people of faith – something to think about. And several other people had several other opinions on the matter, all to show that praise worship music was not right at this particular event.
I was still very unsure about my position, all I knew was that I felt uneasy and I didn’t like that, so I continued to question myself as to why. My answer came in the person of a solo artiste who played the keyboard and sang. As he performed I was enamored by the joy that overshadowed the tiredness on his face (we would learn that he had come directly from his day job) and more profound was the lack of uneasiness I felt, as he was clearly singing about his love for God and other Christian themed lyrics and he was doing a wonderful job. I could feel the attention in the room being focused on him and his lyrics. I could feel the atmosphere shift to less chaotic and more harmonious, as if for the few minutes he sang, everybody agreed. And I got my answer, the uneasiness I felt was indeed shame, but not shame of Christ or my faith but shame for being associated with the acts that had come and done their church praise worship set lists without any real heartfelt content. I felt shame because the music that was being produced was the reason why Christian music was often thought of as being mediocre. Because what they had done was produce the same routine in the same repetitive manner that was characterized by a typical Sunday service where the leaders are led by compulsion to stand in front of the congregation, and not by genuine joy or a yearning. Indeed, this is the way I see things, music is a very powerful tool. Churches have grown to prominence because of the impact their choir had (and have) on the world. Music in the right hands can be an instrument to make people who have never met each other agree without saying a word to each other, or it could be used as an instrument to sow strife. I guess my point is to Christians or Christian musicians, you are creatives which by definition means routine is against your nature so be led and stay away from the box.

Hear No Evil – Speak No Evil – Week Three by RepJ360

“God is not a human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does He Speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill.

God is not a man. Thank God for that. If God were man, repentance would be a tedious business. With God, because of Jesus, we need only ask with a contrite heart and our forgiveness is certain. He holds His word higher than Himself so that when he says a thing he will do it unfailing, so that when he gives a promise it will not go forth without accomplishing what it is sent out to. It is this kind of person that you can trust with all your heart because Numbers 23:19.

This week:

Lord your word is the Voice Of Truth and it says your Shoulders bare our shame. We believe repentance Dare(‘s) You To Move in our lives. We will always Trust In You.

It’s Alright because I’m Yours.

Hear No Evil – Speak No Evil Week Two by RepJ360

God loves you” and “Jesus loves you” have been the punchline of every evangelical mission. So much so that for those of us in the part of the world that have heard of Jesus it has become stale news. So when someone comes over to you and says “Jesus loves you” you respond with a scowl and a “I know!! Ah!”, not half knowing anything. But even after that the love is still there. No worries.

The Love of God is a weird thing. You cannot compare it to anything, you might want to say, think of a mother and her newborn child, the amount of love in that – NO! God’s love is more. You literally cannot compare it to anything. It’s deep… Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep… Unrealistic even. Yeah. God’s love is unrealistic, it transcends the reality we live in. Think about that for a second. So when you feel bad or someone tries to make you feel bad, take it to God, His love would not turn you way, as long as you are coming to Him, He is there for you.
This Week:

No matter what I have done you Love Me Anyway, so I will Fix My Eyes on you. You Are God, and your Promises Remain. For Your Love is Already There.

Headphones and Epiphanies – Tobi’s Story

I love sounds, maybe not as much as some people I can imagine, but I can definitively say I love sounds. Not in that unrealistic way people claim to love – like you could never get annoyed by it, or like something doesn’t change about that love down the road – it has changed, it has annoyed me but I still love it. I try to be as truthful as possible; you know, the truth has a way of lightening the load.

So, let me define what I mean by sounds – – actually, I don’t think I can. Sounds sha; kpa kpa, po po, pi pi, gbesh!… Stuff like that. Of course, it differs; mood, environment, head-space – I’m human, Let me live. So, it is this love of sounds that has given rise to an eclectic taste in music, [Eclectic; a word which here means deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources] which I am quite proud of, if I might add. And along this road, that is, this journey I call life, these sounds have created markers of sorts, check points if you will, which when re-heard cause various kinds of reactions – unbeknownst to the people around me (LOL! I like that word “unbeknownst”. Unbeknownst… LOL). For example, I heard the sounds from The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time recently and I could have sworn I was sitting on a soft bean bag, which is what I sat on when I played it, whereas instead I was sitting on a most uncomfortable wooden chair (Gosh! I can’t wait to play Breath of the Wild). I think that there is the definition of nostalgia. Here,… below, I have five (5) songs that I have explored with my headphones (because that’s what songs are to me – an adventure – discovering new sounds that you won’t have heard if you weren’t looking), five songs that have caused a very sudden realization of truth – Epiphanies – or Eureka moments… Sometimes.

RepJ360 – I’m Yours [The Peace In Surrender]

RepJ360 is a band that means a lot to me, partly because it’s my band but also because they are trying to do something that is different in an unlikely space and it is hard. In making this song I was reminded over and again that when you surrender yourself to the One who made all, a peace will come over you. So much so that when you’re owing a producer money, and you have none, you won’t worry because you just know He “got your back”. Yes, I believe hard work will pay off, but I also think that’s a misnomer [Misnomer; a word here which means a wrong or inaccurate name or designation], it really doesn’t have to be hard.

“…I am Yourrrssssssss…”

The Liturgists – Vapor (A Meditation) [Vanity, Peace]
I’m coming to realize that I’m a person that seeks peace. Not because I’m troubled, but because I see chaos around me daily – I live in Lagos Nigeria, if that means anything to you. So, when my brother sent this track to me I was very appreciative of it because it made the “vanity upon vanity…” idea more real to me and it presented it in a way that is realistic – you don’t have to be a Christian to understand it.
Of course, we often look at the notion of “vanity upon vanity” as a depressing thought but indeed it is freeing because it reminds us that the things that cause us worry are all going to the dirt with everything else. So why worry, when you can ‘not worry’.
“…finitude, after all, is what makes life sweet. Christmas time can be such a magical and wonderful time of the year because it only happens once, not in spite of it.”

Casting Crowns – If We Are The Body [No judgment, Love is a verb]
The very first Casting Crowns song that I heard all those years ago, I can almost remember the smell in the air that day as I lay down on the bunk bed in the room I shared with my cousins, using earphones that I didn’t own with an MP3 player I coveted. I was probably fourteen at the time but the lyrics struck me as hard as they do now. I think it was from that point on that I began to lose some of my respect for the church. I was pained that people did not feel safe in the presence of fellow believers and non-believers felt judged when in their company. I asked myself is this what Jesus caused, had he come to elevate a few and then scorn the rest. – – So why is the “body of Christ” so judgmental, so sanctimonious and so picky of who they show love to. From then on, I have refused to be any of those things, because Christ wasn’t any of those things and because love knows no sin. It’s hard work.
“If we are the body, why aren’t His hands reaching…”

Switchfoot – Thrive [Prosperity is a state of mind]
I’m sure a lot of us know that we were made to thrive not just survive. A common saying that has been going around, especially among people of faith. But we don’t seem to believe it, my mother says that the most unbelieving people are the “believers”, and I think it’s true. If only we believed half of the things we hear in church, we would practice them and we would be the better for it. This song kind of put all that prosperity talk into perspective for me, it’s not in what you own but what you do with it, how we approach it that is. That’s it. I’m not sure if I communicated that properly. Maybe some other time. Check out the song though.
A steering wheel don’t mean you can drive, a warm body don’t mean you’re alive.”
Hans Zimmer – The Dragon Warrior [Life can be an adventure]
You know how literature is defined as a mirror of life. Maybe you didn’t, okay, Literature is defined as a mirror of life. It’s actual not far off from the literal truth. This song for some weird reason says to me, “go out there and grab it”. It has no words but Mr. Hans Zimmer knows how to really get you inspirated [Inspirated; a made-up word which here simply means, inspired]. In case you didn’t recognize it, it’s from the animated movie Kungfu Panda 3.
Your life is a really great movie. You just need to allow yourself to live it.

Turns out my list is not as eclectic as I made it sound. Maybe one day I will share my music library, that’ll definitely show how diverse my palette is [Palette; a word here which means taste] or you could just follow me on Spotify or Deezer (Toby Johnson) I’ve got some neat playlists, and you could also check out the full playlist for Headphones & Epiphanies on Spotify or Deezer

Perhaps the ideas above are a little hifalutin [check your dictionary], or maybe they aren’t, who knows. You could find out. Maybe you could have a couple of epiphanies of your own.
