Are we still friends? I don’t know. Were we ever? Will we still meet up and talk? Maybe. That’s all we ever did anyway. Was I in love? Most definitely not.

Instagram post 2185037580558830300_5115395743 An Abundance of Scorpions by Hadiza El-Rufai.
I remember reading this book and having so many questions about Islam, jotting my questions on sticky notes and carefully placing them on the pages of the book.

I loved that the book helped me see beyond the blanket of religion, to the people beneath, the people so easily hidden behind the stereotypical perception of what it is to be Muslim.
I loved the tenderness in Tambaya’s immediate family, it solidified my belief in kindness; that it is an individual’s decision.
How the orphanage where Tambaya works assigned religion to the children is very telling of how many of us acquired our beliefs.
It made me think of how our first contact with religion starts from the family we are born into and how this is usually the foundation of our faith. I know and understand that it isn’t set in stone, but I can’t help but wonder, if we were allowed to make our decisions as we grow, would we make the same decisions?
Finally, love is messy but so is life and all the things in between. The important thing is how we navigate all the things that are thrown at us.
I have read An Abundance of Scorpions through once and gone back to read specific chapters, passages that I marked down, so yes, I have revisited it and will keep revisiting it. #readinglist #bookstagram #readinglist2018 #religion
Instagram post 2182335533594165064_5115395743 With The Fire On High By Elizabeth Acevedo
I just finished reading this book and decided to write the review when all my emotions and feelings about it were still very fresh.
I love every part of this book, I truly enjoyed the narrative and the book held my attention till the very last sentence.
I enjoy how the book throws everything out in the open from the very first page, it hits you with all the hurts, hard choices and you have no choice but to follow the story and navigate the paths it leads you down.
You’ll fall in love with Emoni; the outward confidence she displays and her inner demons of self doubt, that we all carry with us. You’ll start seeing Babygirl’s head of thick curls, Angelica’s sarcasm yet fierce love will become something you’ll appreciate and the vanilla on ‘Buela hands will fill your head with its smell. At the end, you will be grateful for family, for love and be left with the desire to dig into your own emotions to ask important questions about your life.
I will be revisiting With The Fire On High and I am excited to get myself a copy of Poet X because I have fallen in Love with Elizabeth Acevedo.

Instagram post 2148290346618392403_5115395743 I remember a few years ago my friend Kike texted me the following “Ore, you need to read the book ‘Wonder’, it is really beautiful”. ‘Alright’, I texted Kike back, ‘I will add it to my list.’ I didn’t get around to reading Wonder until a few weeks ago.
Wonder is written by R.J Palacio, I want to tell her what a great job she did with this book. Everything about it is beautiful.
In the book, R. J. highlighted a lot of our natural instincts to things/people we don’t consider normal and the complex journey of self discovery; the many bumps along the way to finding out who we are and the continuing journey to who we want to be.
I enjoyed how you couldn’t put any of the characters into good and bad boxes. I will attempt to explain this statement: we are quick to judge people as good or bad in certain situations, but with the narrative of Wonder, I find myself questioning if my reaction would be different from that of the character I was about to pass judgement on, this is not to take away from the fact that there are downright horrible people in the world and in ‘Wonder’, but you take a minute and see how easily you could be one of them.
Will I be revisiting ‘Wonder’? A big resounding YES!
It is a recommended read from me for everyone. It really causes you to stop and Wonder.

Instagram post 2135714300525094523_5115395743 I just finished reading Manchester Happened by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi. For starters, I didn’t want the book to end, I fell in love with the characters presented in each story.
Each story presents a different human condition and the whirlwind of emotion that comes with it.
I learnt a lot about Ugandan culture and in learning about culture, I learnt we are all the same with similar instincts and in the way our stories play out, because at the heart of it, we are all human.
There are characters I empathised with so much so I wanted to relieve them of their pain, a few I wanted to throw to lions to have their way with.
What I am grateful for is the narrative that shows people for who they are, that allows you to see beyond culture and gets you to the heart of the story.
I’ll be revisiting Manchester Happened in a not so distant future if only to remind myself of the home I found within its pages.
